The gear is selected by three control signals. Manual valve operated by the gearshift cable.Vacuum valve operated by vacuum from the inlet manifold. Governor function is to control the fluid pressure.
The Automatic Transmission Selector Position
The automatic transmission has three forward speeds and one reverse controlled by a six position lever: P- Park, R-Reverse, N- Neutral, D- Drive, 2-LOW, 1- low. The selector lever has push button must be depressed when you want to select the gears.
The parking position locks the output shaft.This position is used when you wan to park your vehicle. The engine can start in with position P. Never select P when your car is in motion. To adjust the engine when is running use P. The position R is reverse gear. The N position you can selected to start your car engine or when your car is idling in the traffic for long time. The D position is normal driving once selected the three gears engage automatically. The position 2 lower gear will engage automatically but the highest gear will not engage. You use the position 2 on wet road, steep road hill climbing or descents. The position 1 is not used all the time, is needed on steep inclines or declines.
The Automatic Transmission Inhibitor Switch
The inhibitor switch provides the current to the reverse light when your transmission is on the reverse position and also prevent your vehicle to start in any gear position except park and neutral. If your car back lights not come on, or your vehicle will not start when the shifter is in the middle of the P or N position the inhibitor should be checked , adjusted, if is necessary replaced.
