How An Electronic Fuel Injection System (EFI) Works On Your Car
With more and more vehicle manufacturers realizing the potential of vehicles, it wont be long before every car produced will be infused with technology. On later vehicles the engines use an Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) fuel system. The new cars are equipped maybe you hear your automotive service mechanic talking about throttle body injection (TBI), or what we called multi point fuel injection (MPFI).
Why An Electronic Fuel Injection System (EFI) Is Important On Your Car
The electronic fuel injection system (EFI) provides optimum mixture ratios and response of the fuel injection permits your car engine to run on the less possible fuel and air mixture. This operation reduces the exhaust gas toxic emission. The fuel system is interrelated in this operation and works in conjunction with the emissions control and exhaust systems, also some elements are related directly to the fuel system. The electronic fuel injection (EFI) system is composed with the fuel flow system, air flow system, and an electrical signalling system. This is the most important components because they make up the entire electronic fuel injection (EFI) system.
How The Fuel Is Delivered On Electronic Fuel Injection System (EFI)
The fuel from your reservoir is delivered under pressure by an electric fuel pump using relays. You find this relays inside your car or in the engine compartment. The relays are designed to stop the engine and turn off the alternator and the oil pressure can drop, the electric pump will stop functioning. The quantity of the fuel must be injected to your engine is determined by injection pulse duration, also by a pressure difference between fuel pressure and intake manifold vacuum pressure. If you have fuel injection problems do your diagnosis before you replace any components of the electronic fuel injection (EFI)system.
The injection pulse duration are controlled by engine control unit (ECU). The pressure difference between the fuel pressure and the intake manifold vacuum pressure must be maintained at constant level. Intake manifold vacuum pressure varies with your engine operating conditions, that why you find a pressure regulator in the fuel line system to regulate the fuel pressure in response to change in the intake manifold pressure.
When An Injection Happen On Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) System
Only time an injection of fuel happen with every rotation of your engine. The injection signal comes from ECU the control unit, your car injectors are operating simultaneously same time independent of your engine stroke multi point fuel injection (MPFI) only. Each injection supplies half of the quantity of the fuel required by each cylinder, and the length of the injection period is determined by information feed to the control unit by various sensors include in the electronic fuel injection (EFI)system. Is not only that there are elements affecting the injection duration, engine rpm, quantity and temperature of the intake air, throttle valve opening, the temperature of your engine coolant, intake manifold vacuum pressure and the last one is the quantity of the oxygen in the exhaust gases.
The electronic fuel injection system (EFI) operates at high fuel pressure and any leak can affect the EFI system efficiency. The presence of the leak can cause fire. Due to the intake air flow is critical to the operation of the electronic fuel injection system minimum of air leak can cause incorrect air and fuel mixture.
How To Take Care About Your Electronic Fuel Injection System (EFI)
- You do not disconnect your battery terminal if your car engine is still running
- If you want to disconnect the fuel line you must eliminate the high pressure in the system, you must disconnect negative battery terminal to eliminate any sparks happen while fuel is present.
- Before removing any electronic fuel injection system components check and switch off your car ignition and your car negative battery terminal is removed.
- The electronic fuel injection system harness must kept away from the main harness. Including also CB antenna cable. Doing that you prevent electrical pulses in other systems from interfering with electronic fuel injection system function.
- You must be sure the EFI wiring connection are tight, secure and clean. The bad connection can cause high voltage in the ignition coil that what can drain IC circuit.
- The accelerator should not be depressed when you start your car engine. You do not immediately after you starting your car engine, rev your car engine unnecessarily.
