Can Oil Filter Change Prevent Engine Damage
In modern engines, oil is routed through the oil filter before it goes to the crankshaft bearings, cam bearings and valve train-gear heads call it full-flow filtration. It’s the most efficient way of removing contaminants, assuring only filtered oil finds its way into the engine. As the oil filter begins to wear, it develops buildups of dirt and debris that obstruct the flow of oil. To maintain performance and prevent engine damage, the oil filter should be changed before it reaches this point. Waiting too long can result in engine failure due to loss of lubrication and catastrophic damage to your engine.
An engine’s primary defense against internal abrasion, and the resulting wear and tear, is the oil filter. Oil filters, like K&N oil filters, remove solid contaminants like dirt, carbon and metal particles from the oil before they can damage the surfaces of bearings, journals and cylinders within the engine. The fresher oil filter, the more effective it is at trapping these contaminants.
Regularly changing your air filter is just as important. When air is restricted, your engine can fail, leading to overheating and even a cracked block. Even worse, when airflow drops, your ride has to use more fuel to make the same amount of power, so your MPGs are going to tank. The life of an air filter depends largely on how much crud it collects. Believe it or not, a slightly dirty air filter actually cleans more efficiently than one that’s brand new. That’s because the debris trapped in the air filter screens out smaller particles. Eventually though, every filter reaches the saturation point, causing a noticeable pressure drop that restricts airflow. Fuel economy, performance and emissions erode and continue to suffer until the dirty filter is replaced.
The Importance of Replacing the Air Filter in a Car
The purpose of an air filter in a car is to filter the air that enters the engine when the car is running. Even air has several impurities and carries dust and if it is not filtered then the engine will get ruined. The air quality is very important for the longevity of the engine. There are different types of air filters available for the car engines. They can be made of different materials; however, every car company uses something specific for their cars and when you replace an air filter try to get the same one.
It is best if the car company workshop does it. The filter will be made of materials that can filter out dust, mold, bacteria and small particles. Over the time of usage the air filter gets clogged and because of filtering various things and needs to be changed. If the filter is not changed, then the efficiency of the engine also goes down. The old filter has to be replaced with a new filter to improve the performance of your car’s engine.
You can replace the filter yourself if you have some basic knowledge about your car. Open the bonnet and look for the filter unit. It will be located in the engine area and it usually is found on top of the engine. The filter unit will be round in shape and has a metal or a plastic cover. This may have screws. So take out the screws to expose the unit. Then follow the procedure listed in the owner’s manual to replace the filter. Make sure that you screw back the screws firmly into place after replacing the air filter.
