What The Front Wheel Alignment Mean?
The importance of the effect of the perfect adjustement and setting of the front wheels on the tyres consupmtion and road-holding qualities, I feel the subject deserve more detailed attention than the brief reference made to it.
The front wheel alignment is adjustment made to the front wheels so that they are angular relationship to the suspension and the ground. The front wheels that are out of proper alignment not only affect steering control but also increase tire wear.
The Front Alignment Adjustments Required
The accurate positionning of the front wheels demands the observance of the under noted requirement for: Front wheel Toe-In – Camber and Caster. The toe-in and the camber can be varied by means of simple adjustment operations. The caster depend on the geometrical dimensions. The dimensions or angles are not maintained witch will generelly be found to have been damaged as the result of knocks or collision must be replaced.
Final Check When Inspecting or Adjusting Front Wheelignment Position
The alignment between the rear axle and the front wheels should also checked.These checks to be accurate it is essential:
– Tyre Pressure, Size, Type or Make, (front wheel must be same ).
– Steering System – Ball-joint upper and lower are not worn and that there is no excessive play.
– Check the front wheel bearing play, and you check also all the bolt holding the steering gear and suspension arms to the body are tight.
– Check shock absorbers.
– Position of the pitman arm
– Steering box adjustment
– Check idler arm bush
– Check the static load, that is when the fuel thank is full.
The front Wheel Toe-In Setting:
The Toe setting is the amount by witch the front or rear wheels point inwards at the front of the wheel in relation to each other. When the wheels point inwards they are called Toe-In it’ s positive value. When the wheels point outwards they are said Toe-Out it’s negative value. The purpose of the correct Toe is to ensure that the wheels run parallel when the car is in motion. An incorrect Toe setting may effect the stability and controlability of the car. The Toe can be measured as an angle or leaner dimension depending upon the equipment used. Toe-Out- On Turns
Toe out on turns is different in angles between each front wheel and the center line of the car when the steering is turned.
The Front Wheel Camber Setting
The Camber is the measurement in degrees. That the wheel is incleaned from the vertical viewing from the vertical. The wheel leans from the car is Positive Camber. If the wheel leans toward the car is Negative Camber. If the positive camber is more to the specification the car can pull to the side left or right and the tires wears from out side.If the camber is negative the tires wear from inside. Camber On Turns
When the car goes into a curve at high speed centrifigal force causes a shift of the vehicle weight toward outside wheels. On most cars the frame and the body on the outside of the curve lower, adding positive camber (in relation to the car) to the outside front wheel. At the same time the side of the car (on the inside of the curve) rises adding negative camber (in relation to the car) to the inside front wheel.
The Caster Setting
The caster angle is tilting of the wheel either forwards or backwards from the vertical as seem from the side of the car. Caster angle influences the directional stability of the steering to increase the tendency of the steering to self centre, the steering will normally be designed with positive castor.
