How The Differential Gear Assembly Function?
After engine power is transmitted through the transmission and the propeller shaft it enters the rear axle assembly. The rear axle centre portion transfers power from the transmission through a set of bevelled gears to the rear wheels of the vehicle via side shafts at right angles to the propeller shaft.
The rear suspension is of the rigid rear axle. The differential and the hypoid bevel drive gears. The crown wheel and differential assembly is carried on tapered roller bearing grease packed and sealed.
Differential Gear Pinions
The differential contain two pinions are completely free to turn independently of one another and are contained in case with is attached to crown wheel. One of this pinions is in full view, the other one at the other end of the shaft.
Differential Gear Pinion Shaft
The pinion shaft or the drive pinion is the front pinion related to the propeller shaft by pinion flange. Inside the pinion flange are spline to permit the pinion shaft to insert in. The pinion flange is tighten by nut. Before you remove the retaining nut and disconnect the propeller shaft from the pinion flange, you must mark the pinion flange with the propeller shaft for you don’t get vibration. This operation can be done only if the pinion shaft seal is leaking.
The Differential Gear Pinion Bearing
Is controlled by spacer installed between the inner cones of the front and the rear pinion bearings. The spacer are also used to obtain pinion height position.
The Differential Gear Crown Wheel
Is driven by pinion connected to the propeller shaft flanges, when is revolves taking the cage and the free pinion with it.
The axle shaft and the bearing assemblies, and the pinion seal can be removed and installed without removing the axle housing from the vehicle.
The side shaft is a solid, encased shaft with is found in certain types of rear axles. The side shaft transmits power from the differential to the wheels. The side shaft bearings are installed from the splined end of the shaft and are retained by collar witch is an interference fit on the shaft and witch bears against the bearing inner race. The side shaft oil seals are located outboard of the axle bearing assemblies on the side shaft. If the oil seal is faulty, the bearing must be removed to gain access to the oil seal. If you remove the side shaft bearing assembly from the shaft you must fit new bearing.
How To Detect Your Vehicle Rear Axle Is Damaged ?
If you drive over run and you hear noise, your car oil level is low, top up level by opening the filler plug. Check crownwheel bolts is not loose. Or you have loose bearing cap bolts. Is possible general wear in bearing or gearteeth.
If you hear noise on the turn that mean, seized, broken or damaged pinion, side gear or thrust washers.
When is knock during gearshift or when taking up drive. You have worn side gear splines, worn gears,worn half shaft splines, drive pinion nut loose or loose crownwheel bolts or bearing cap bolts.
