Most drivers know how to operate the clutch on their vehicle, but it is surprising how many people do not understand how a clutch works. Sure, your mechanic knows everything and having your car regularly serviced will generally avoid any problems.
But it does not hurt to know a little about the operation of your clutch repair so that you can be alerted to any warning signs and have your vehicle clutch repair before the damage becomes more severe.
The clutch consists of a single dry driven plate assembly, splined to slide on the transmission input shaft. A diaphragm type pressure plate assembly is bolted to the engine flywheel. The driven plate is sandwiched between the pressure plate and flywheel and transmits the drive from the engine to the transmission.
Damper springs are interposed between the hub of the driven plate assembly and the plate friction surfaces in order to cushion the drive. The spigot bearing for transmission input shaft, located in the centre of the flywheel , is a prepached scaled ball type.
The release mechanism is actuated by the clutch pedal, thence via the clutch cable to the actuating lever and shaft and the release lever and release bearing.
Operation of the clutch pedal moves the release bearing and diaphragm spring centre towards the flywheel. When the outer edge of the diaphragm spring deflects the clutch is caused to disengage.
Automotive Clutch Repair Symptoms
Clutch Slipping :
Weak or broken pressure plate diaphragm springs – Worn driven plate facing – Worn or scored flywheel face – Worn or scored pressure plate face – Insufficient release lever free play. In the most cases clutch slippage is first evident by a marked increase in engine revs, for no apparent reason, when pulling up a steep hill. That mean you need clutch repair.
Clutch Shudder :
Oil on driven plate facing – Scored pressure plate or flywheel face – Loose or damaged driven plate hub – Loose driven plate facing – Cracked pressure plate face. Clutch shudder is usually most evident when reversing up an incline . As loose or broken engine mountings are a cause for clutch shudder.
Clutch Grab :
Gummy driven plate facing – Cracked pressure plate face – Loose or broken engine mounting – Release mechanism or clutch cable worn or damaged . Visually check out the external parts of the release mechanism before removing the clutch for inspection.
Release Bearing Noise :
Dry , worn or siezed bearing – Damaged pressure plate diaphragm spring – Insufficient release lever free play. Lightly depress the clutch pedal with the engine running to check for release bearing noise.
Insufficient Clutch Release :
Frayed or broken clutch cable – Worn or damaged release mechanism – Warped clutch driven plate – Clutch master or clutch sleeve leaking . Visually check the clutch cable or leak of transmission .
